I jedno drugo odgovara mestu u kome je.
Ovo prvo, i ako sareno, nekako je strogo i utegnuto kao i zgrade okolo,a i sama Nemacka.
Ovo drugo, sareno, razigrano, nekako organski kao i okolina okolo, a i sam Brazil.

SOM Wins Competition to Create Beijing’s Sustainable City Center
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/26/09

Slika

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) was recently awarded the contract to create a stunning new Central Business District in Beijing. The project will integrate into the existing downtown urban district and will improve transportation infrastructure while introducing energy-efficient buildings green public space. The plan also provides a framework for new sustainable growth that would result in eliminating 215,000 tons of CO2 per year, which is the equivalent of planting 14 million adult trees.

Slika

SOM is well known for its architecture and urban design projects, and is also responsible for San Francisco’s Treasure Island Redevelopment Plan as well as the plan for Jumiera Gardens in Dubai. Their plan for Beijing’s new CBD calls for the creation of three new areas – the Cultural, Chaoyang, and the Gateway Districts, which will be anchored around new parks and green boulevards. The CBD will comprise a network of smaller, more walkable city blocks to encourage pedestrian travel and time spent in the expansive downtown parks system. Additionally, all of the streets will be built to accommodate safe bicycle travel.

A new streetcar system has been proposed to link all of the new areas with existing districts and popular destinations, providing commuters with easy access to high speed rail service. Updated transportation infrastructure will also include express commuter rail service between the Beijing Capital International Airport, the CBD, and high speed rail service to Beijing South Station.

SOM’s redevelopment plan also defines strategies for growth and expansion. They have created a framework for new infrastructure and high performance buildings that will enable the city to grow in a more sustainable manner. If implemented, the plan could reduce energy consumption within the district by 50%, reduce water consumption by 48%, reduce landfill waste by 80%, and result in a 50% reduction in carbon emissions.

SOM’s exciting new plan combines many of the necessary elements of a sustainable city – transportation, open space, pedestrian and bike friendly streets, and energy-efficient buildings. The Beijing CBD Administration Committee has stated that the plan would “enable China’s capital city to grow as a global center for commerce, yet be a green and ecological setting for healthy life.”

Cité du Design: Solar Powered International Design Center Unveiled
by Bridgette Meinhold, 11/06/09

Slika

Situated in an defunct arms manufacturing facility in Saint-Etienne, the recently unveiled Cité du Design is a stunning international center for design. Designed by LIN, the project completely renovated the historic complex and integrated a new facility made out of triangular scaffolding. Powered by solar energy and supplemented by an efficient heating system, the energy efficient Cité du Design is a world class design center that lives up to its name.

Slika

Designed by Berlin and Paris based LIN, the €41.5 million Cité du Design just opened at the beginning of October. Inside the complex are auditoriums, meeting rooms, exhibition space, a media library, and indoor gardens with an observation tower located alongside the long hall. A latticed 3D structure forms the walls and roof of the complex, and the interior of the hall is left open without any supports or beams to get in the way.

The center is very energy efficient and utilizes a heat exchange and recovery system to reduce energy used for heating. Pre-conditioned air from the internal gardens, which are not heated, is drawn into the system to heat the nearby rooms. The skin of the building is composed up of 14,000 equilateral triangles made from different materials that help to control light, temperature and air flow according to environmental conditions. Some of these triangles are actually photovoltaic cells used to generate power for use in the building.

Herzog & de Meuron Unveil New Miami Art Museum
by Bridgette Meinhold, 11/03/09

Slika

Herzog & de Meuron recently unveiled their finished design for the new Miami Art Museum, which will be a stunning building surrounded by hanging gardens with tropical plants. Fit for a world renowned art museum, the new MAM will be three times as large as the existing building and will be aiming for LEED Silver certification. A fluid and adaptable interior layout combined with outdoor gardens and sculpture exhibition space will allow the MAM to expand for future growth.

Slika

Last year Herzog & de Meuron unveiled their preliminary design for the updated and expanded Miami Art Museum. The design was open for public comment, and just recently the final design for the museum was unveiled. Located in downtown Miami in the a park overlooking Biscayne Bay, the new Miami Art Museum will have 120,000 sq feet of programmable indoor exhibition space, plus 80,000 sq feet of space outside for art exhibitions, educational activities, relaxation and dining. Also located in the Museum Park will be the Miami Science Museum, as well as a branch of the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, creating a tourist destination and cultural center in the heart of the city.

The museum is a three-story structure covered in a canopy that completely shades the building and creates a large veranda. Lush vegetation will be planted all along the ceiling of the canopy and on columns throughout the veranda space. This hanging garden will have a comfortable climate and serve as a buffer zone between the Museum Park and the Museum itself. Inside, the first floor will house the entry halls, auditorium, shop and café, while the third floor will contain offices. Part of the first floor and all of the second will contain the permanent collections and traveling exhibitions, illuminated by carefully placed windows that allow natural light to filter in.

Slika

Green strategies for the museum include geothermal cooling of the building and exterior surfaces as well as the use of vegetation surrounding the museum to provide a more comfortable climate for visitors. The interior of the museum’s climate must also be tightly controlled with efficient HVAC systems to protect the art collections inside. Existing environmental conditions such as the site’s solar resource, wind and rain have been taken into account during the design process. The Museum will aim for LEED Silver certification serving as a model for future growth in the downtown Miami area. Ground breaking is expected to start in the Spring of 2010 with completion in 2013.

Kö-Bogen: Düsseldorf’s Green Roofed Crystal Complex
by Bridgette Meinhold, 11/02/09

Slika

Daniel Libeskind recently unveiled his remarkable design for the Kö-Bogen, a new mixed-use development in Germany. Set in downtown Düsseldorf, the retail and office complex is crowned with a grassy green roof and is designed to fit in with the surrounding historic architecture of Köenigsallee Boulevard. This lofted space connects two city blocks and creates a whole new zone for pedestrians, shoppers and employees to walk, run and enjoy open space in the heart of the city.

Slika

Located adjacent to the Hofgarten, Düsseldorf’s central park, the Kö-Bogen will help create a larger and more continuous open green space that runs from the city center out to the park and the Rhine. The green roof will help connect the building with the beautiful historical parks surrounding the downtown area, while reducing rainwater runoff and helping to significantly reduce heating and cooling costs.

The facade of the building is meant to reflect the context of the surrounding buildings through a combination of glass and natural stone. The limestone, which is locally quarried, provides important historical context for the building and makes it a natural fit for the downtown neighborhood. The two-block complex marks a synthesis between two different architectural styles – linear elements relate it to the surrounding historical buildings, while curved spaces connect it to the natural environment.

The first 3 floors of the mixed-use complex contain flagship retail stores, and the top 3 floors will be utilized as office space. On the exterior of the buildings, subtle variations in window design and types of glazing help control lighting infiltration and solar heat gain, reducing energy use inside. Now that funding has been secured, construction of this new downtown development is set to begin sometime early in 2010.

Zero-Power Digital Cloud Shows Images and Data in the London Skyline
by Ariel Schwartz, 11/11/09

Slika

It sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but architects at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have a plan to build a massive digital cloud above the London skyline. The Cloud, which has been shortlisted in a competition to build a tourist attraction in the Olympic Park with a lasting legacy, would feature 400 foot-tall mesh towers topped with solar powered plastic bubbles that show images and data — i.e. weather information, Olympic race results, and spectator numbers. If built, the cloud could also be used as an observation deck and a park.

Slika
Slika
Slika

Ramps, stairs, and lifts would carry tourists to the top of the cloud. Once inside the structure, viewers would have a sweeping view of the city below. Despite displaying a constant stream of data, the cloud wouldn’t take any power from the grid. Instead, it could generate all its own energy from a regenerative braking system and solar cells located on the ground and in the plastic spheres.

Even if the Cloud isn’t chosen as the winner in the city’s competition, the MIT designers are determined to build it. To that end, they have launched a fundraising website in the hopes that millions of people will provide small donations. Want to help make the cloud of a reality? Check out the site here.

Solar Parking Lot of the Future Does Much More Than Park Cars
by Bridgette Meinhold, 11/12/09

Slika

We’re pretty certain that parking lots of the future will be more than just storage areas for our vehicles. They’ll generate their own power, have morphing advertisements, and likely recharge cars as well. Well our friends at Designboom and Nissan are way ahead of the curve. They just announced the results of their Think Outside the Parking Box competition, and while we’re certainly impressed with some of the imaginative ways to park cars (car ferris wheel, anyone?), we were most excited about the Solasis Light Tower. This renewable energy generating parking lot actually uses the cars’ windshields to shine sun onto a solar power concentrating tower adding valuable juice to the grid. Read on to see how the designers propose to make the tower work and see some detailed pics of the final design.

Slika
Slika
Slika
Slika
Slika

In order to save precious surface area in the city, the Solasis Light Tower is slightly removed from the city center on a floating platform. Cars are parked so that their windshields and hoods face the solar receptor at the front of the parking lot. The designers, Klaud Wasiak and Yongbang Ho focused the concept around the Nissan Qashqai which has mesh made up of photovoltaics and mirrors on the windshield and roof. When parked, the mirrors activate and track the sun and redirect the beams of light to the solar concentrating power tower.

Drivers of cars who park in this offshore parking lot can hop on an underground metro line that will bring them to the city core. Or they may choose to cut through the above-ground park and get exercise by walking into the city. Wasiak & Ho designed this because they felt that parking lots are wasted and practically unusable space. With a power generating parking lot like this, the spaces actually give back to the city.

We also really likeNejur Andrei’s concept, who proposed the SolarParking, a way to recharge cars wirelessly via photovoltaics.

Construction Begins on Amazing Tunnel-Shaped Rotterdam Market Hall
by Bridgette Meinhold, 11/20/09

Imagine having this sweet public market pop up in your town? Well the lucky residents of Rotterdam are actually getting one! This week, the mayor of the city announced the commencement of construction on the huge tunnel-shaped market hall which will flash images of gigantic fresh fruits and vegetables via LCD screens on the inside and be lined with balconied apartments offering killer views on the outside. This true mixed-use development combining residences, shopping, restaurants and a public market will be a central hub of activity for citizens and tourists. The project is being developed by Provast and was designed by MVRDV.

Slika
Slika
Slika
Slika

Rotterdam’s new Market Hall creates a 100,000 sq meter public market space covered in an arch of ten floors of 228 apartments. Of those apartments, the majority will be for purchase, but 102 of them will be available as rental properties. The bottom two floors will house restaurants and shopping, while underground, there will be a supermarket as well as a parking garage with 1,200 spaces. The archway will be protected from the elements on the front and back by flexible suspended glass facades.

The design for the Market Hall is a result of new laws from the Netherlands that require public markets to be covered, and also that certain rooms for a residential dwelling must have natural daylight. Each apartment is situated so that rooms and living spaces are situated on the exterior of the archway with views out to the city, while the kitchen, dining and storage is on the interior, with lots of insulation to block the noise from the bustling market below. One hundred stalls will be available for the sale of fresh foods daily and the interior surface of the archway will feature changing pictures projected from LCD screens.

It’s so exciting to see a great mixed-use project like this actually get started and will be even more exciting to see the end result. Hopefully there are a few of these apartments available for vacation rentals and we can stay there when we visit Rotterdam.
