Dalian Shide: China’s Stunning New Sustainable Stadium
by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/16/09

Slika

Sports fans, get ready for a spectacular new experience – NBBJ recently revealed their design for China’s new Dalian Shide Stadium and it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Built as though the stadium literally opened up from underground, two exterior walls of the structure are covered in grass and plants and the other two are open to connect the games with the city and allow glimpses of the intense action inside. Sustainability is a top priority and the design includes water recycling, daylighting, renewable energy and the beautiful and original living walls on the exterior.

Slika

Los Angeles-based NBBJ Architects, who have a good handle on green roof design, are responsible for this innovative stadium concept. A far cry from traditional bowls, the design focuses more on the spectators’ view and the fan’s experience. Visitors to this Chinese stadium will have excellent views to the playing field below, but also have views of the mountains in one direction and in other, the ocean. Opening up the stadium to the city allows a stronger connection and allows people outside the stadium to be part of the event as well.

The design for the stadium was envisioned as though someone cut the ground in two and pulled up either side to form the exterior garden walls. These walls then contain the the structure for the roof, the VIP suites, the toilets and concessions stands, the mechanical spaces, and the ticket booths. A concourse circles the stadium with continuous 360 views of the field and large screen LED panels on the interior walls broadcast the game. The exterior of the structure is completely clad in living plants that change with the seasons. The stadium roof is made up of lightweight fabric strung out on flexible cables that will protect fans from the elements, but still provide natural light.

Power is generated on site from integrated wind turbines and solar panels built into the walls and roof. Water will be collected and recycled for irrigation, toilet flushing, air conditioning and fire suppression. Paving around the stadium will be porous to allow for storm water infiltration and much of the stadium will be pre-fabricated in a temporary on-site factory.

Sietch Nevada: Desert Oasis for a Drought-Stricken Future
by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/15/09

Slika

Sietch Nevada is a futuristic concept city that envisions a dystopian water-hoarding society where drought is a constant state and wars are fought over water. Designed by Matsys Designs, the underground city is situated within a network of tunnels and caverns that offer protection and water storage, creating an oasis in the desert. The dense underground community includes a network of waterways and canals enclosed by residential and commercial cavern structures that form an underground Venice so to speak.

Slika

If you think Sietch Nevada sounds like a city taken straight out of the novel Dune then you’re right – a Sietch is actually a cave system that served as a village for the Fremen tribal community. Matsys Designs‘ city to be located in Nevada, is a man-made underground cave system, connected together by canals that act as both as transportation passageways and irrigation canals. Deep below the city are underground aquifers which provide storage for the precious resource that the city depends on. The caverns themselves are cellular in form and connected in a honeycomb structure that is full of dense urban life.

While the life force of the city is stored underground in the aquifers, the city is powered from above. On the surface water is harvested, energy is generated, and food is grown via urban agriculture and aquaculture. From above these cellular pods seem like desert blooms filled with various elements – ponds, skylights, agriculture domes, and energy harvesters.

Sietch Nevada is a harbinger of desperate times when societies are forced to resort to voraciously storing and hoarding water – a future which may not be far off. Water shortages and droughts are already starting to become commonplace, especially in the Southwest, which relies on the waters of the Colorado River to sustain millions of people. With more and more people headed to the area every year, the Colorado and the aquifers of the region are not able to keep up. Pretty soon, we may have to resort to something like this Sietch. Perhaps it’s time to freshen up on Dune & Cadillac Desert and start preparing. :D :D :D

Colossal Green Volcano Building Rises in Italy
by Mike Chino, 09/14/09

Slika

A jaw-dropping feat of architecture has risen in the Italian city of Nola, just a stone’s throw away from the cataclysmic Mt. Vesuvius. Designed by Renzo Piano, Vulcano Buono is an epic cone-shaped commercial center crowned with a gorgeous sloping green roof. Piano’s “good volcano” contributes a vital new space to the southern edge of the Nola commercial district, which is the most most important freight terminal complex in southern and central Italy.

Slika

Inspired by the surrounding landscape, Vulcano Buono has a gently sloping profile that rises from the earth as a grassy green knoll. The structure’s roof is carpeted with a vegetative layer of over 2,500 plants that helps to insulate the interior spaces and reduces the structure’s visual impact so that it’s barely visible from space. Renzo Piano clearly has a penchant for grassy hills – see also the undulating green roof that tops the California Academy of Sciences.

A 150 meter-wide clearing in the volcano’s crater lends space for an outdoor theater, a market, and a sloping pine forest. Rising around this heart is a concentric series of circles that form the center’s commercial areas. The volcano’s slopes are held by structural components meant to evoke trees – each “trunk” sprouts three or four supporting “branches”.

The roof of Vulcano Buono is laced with a series of skylights fitted with solar-control double-pane glass that allows daylight to filter through the mall, reducing energy needs from lighting. The interior of the complex houses shops, a supermarket, a 2,000 seat cinema, restaurants, and a hotel. Renzo Piano describes the building as “a contemporary take on a greek marketplace, a void as a place for events, meetings, dialogue and the gathering of people”.

MAD Unveils Taichung Convention Center With Solar Eco-Skin
by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/25/09

Slika

Like a cluster of pleated, venetian blind-esque volcanoes, this new convention center in Taiwan has “skin” that will naturally ventilate the structure and generate energy from solar power. Beijing-based MAD Architects recently designed the Taichung Convention Center as a commission by the Taiwanese government. The center is intended to become a new local landmark and help redefine the cultural landscape of the city, while also drawing attention to sustainable development and growth.

Slika

The folded solar eco-skin of the building serves two purposes – first, the envelopes provide natural air flow to the interior to minimize air conditioning. Second, the pleatings also utilize a “double photovoltaic glass,” which will help reduce energy consumption. One side of the pleat is a transparent material that lets light into the interior, providing plentiful natural daylight, while the other side of the pleat is solid.

Built according to existing site topography, the structure of the center further accentuates what was already there. The moutainous forms resemble craters and are anywhere from 39-85 meters in height. Outdoor courtyards and balconies dot the architectural form to create a more organic landscape. In total, the building area is over 216,000 square meters (+ 2.3 million sq ft) and will have various uses including entertainment, retail, convention space, offices and parking. The inside of the convention center is filled with light and will hopefully be all it claims to be in terms of sustainability.

Stunning Facade Renovation Pours in Daylight
by Jorge Chapa, 09/24/09

Slika

Harnessing daylight in the busy and narrow streets of London is a remarkable challenge for any architect. Recently ALA met that challenge in their remarkable renovation of the 10 Hills Place office. Using a bit of ingenuity and a bit of shipmaking technology, the architects created a sculptural facade that is as beautiful as it is effective. It’s been said that you can’t judge a building by it’s facade, but for this building, that is precisely what we are going to do.

Slika

Slika

The structure itself was an extension to an existing office building. Rather than demolish what was there, they placed a lightweight steel frame over the existing concrete structure and applied a new skin that made the old building relevant again.

The facade was inspired by the artwork of Lucio Fontana, an Argentinian Sculptor well known for his “slash” series of works, which featured holes sliced across the surface of a painting. Using that aesthetic as a jumping off point, Amanda Levette Architects created a curved aluminum-clad facade with four slashes, or eyelids, which function as skylights. This may seem like a purely aesthetic decision that risks diminishing the building’s access to daylight, but thankfully this is not the case.

Using some rather clever detailing modeled upon the building’s existing facade, the skylights are able to capture the skylight and efficiently transfer it within the office space. The glass in the facade is self-cleaning, while the clever design of the raingutters ensures that the facade is low-maintenance, something of key importance to the owner of the building. To top it all off, the aluminum cladding and sculptural shape create a memorable facade that radically changes depending on the sky conditions.

10 Hills Place is a wonderful addition to London’s urban fabric, a beautiful use of an existing structure, and a fantastic revitalization of an old, nondescript space.

North America’s Largest Living Wall Installation by PNC
by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/23/09

Slika

No, we’re not advertising for PNC. But they are – on the side of their headquarters building in downtown Pittsburgh. They recently finished installing what is said to be North America’s largest living wall. Designed by Kari Katzander of Mingo Design and made possible with the expertise of Green Living™ Technologies, PNC’s living wall is not only beautiful, but should help reduce energy use as well. This spectacular vertical garden is impressive in size as well, and is roughly the size of a doubles tennis court! Check out a pic of the full wall after the jump.

Slika

The 2,380 sq foot living wall is soil based and includes many regional plants, all acquired locally within 500 miles of downtown Pittsburgh. The living wall system, which is made up of 602 2×2 ft square panels, is anchored directly into the reinforced concrete masonry on the south facing wall. Cenkner Engineering Associates of Coraopolis, PA and BD&E Strategic Branding and Design of Pittsburgh provided engineering and additional design. So far, the panels are reducing the temperature of the building, with preliminary studies showing that the wall behind the panels is 25% cooler than ambient temperatures.

Watering of the living wall is expected to be minimal, with 15 minutes of watering per week via an internally controlled irrigation system, and when fully saturated, the wall will weigh 24 tons. The 8 varieties of plants are actually evergreen, meaning they should remain green throughout the year with some even flowering in the spring. In addition to their living wall, PNC recently completed a new park around the corner full of drought resistant plants and has many LEED certified branch locations throughout the US. They may be a big corporate business, but they definitely know how to do good green design.

Stunning Green Roofed High School by Off Architecture
by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/23/09

Slika

High school students in Revin, France will soon be attending classes in a stunning new terraced building covered in green roofs. Seen from above the new Lycee Jean Moulin school will simply appear as a terraced landscape, practically disappearing into the hillside. Designed by Paris-based, Off Architecture in association with Duncan Lewis Scape Architecture and Jeans Giacinto, this green roofed marvel is curvaceous and organic, blending into the countryside. We’re admittedly a bit jealous – our high schools weren’t nearly as cool.

Slika

Slika

This sustainable school will be built to utilize the constraints of the slope, receding and elevating up the hillside. Each terraced level is one single floor and has high windows to capture a lot of natural daylight. Rather than remain flat, the roof undulates in gentle waves across the level for a more natural look and is covered with vegetation to blend in with the surrounding landscape.

Set to be completed in 2012, these students will be attending class in a beautiful and natural looking environment. Their one complaint might be that it looks like they’ll be getting plenty of exercise, hiking up the interior hill of their school every day to get to class.

Bio-Fuel Growing Eco Pods Rejuvenate Stalled Boston Project
by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/21/09

Slika

Halted in November 2008, mid-construction, the Filene development in downtown Boston is currently barely even a shell of a building. The bones of the building are up, but sub street level a giant hole leaves a gouge in the city’s plan. Undaunted, Höweler + Yoon Architecture and Squared Design Lab teamed up to design a vertical tower of prefabricated “eco pods” filled with bio-fuel producing algae for the space. The new tower would act as a center to test new algae species and different growing methods.

Slika

Stalled projects are a blight on any city’s landscape, but several Boston architects are looking to turn those mid-construction eyesores into useful (and cool-lookin’) spaces. With the economy in the gutter, many developers’ plans were squashed, but rather than sit idly, the Boston Globe asked architects to take a look at the sites and envision completely new projects that use the existing structure to improve the city. Höweler + Yoon and Squared Design Lab took a stab at the stalled Filene Development at Downtown Crossing and envisioned “Eco Pods,” a prefab, bio-fuel producing building that can adapt, change and grow over time.

Robotic arms attached to the building would move the pods around to optimize growing conditions. Voids are created when the pods are reconfigured, leaving behind space for public parks or botanical gardens. Bio-fuel created within the pods is used to power the robotic arms and the remainder would be used elsewhere, possibly to assist construction. Once construction is complete, the pods could be taken and reinstalled on another building and be reused. As Höweler + Yoon says about the project “This is anticipatory pre-cycled architecture, capable of generating a new micro-urbanism that is local, agile and carbon net-postive.”

Odobren veliki projekat u Sankt Peterburgu uprkos protivljenju Uneska

U kompleksu će biti smešteno sedište Gaspromnjefta, naftnog ogranka kompanije, a uključivaće i poslovni prostor, hotel, koncertnu dvoranu, umetničku galeriju i poslovni centar.
