2014 Winter Olympic Stadium By Populous Will Have Crystalline Skin
by Bridgette Meinhold, 09/30/09

Slika

Populous, a new venture recently spun-off from leading sustainable architecture firm HOK has unveiled its design for the stadium that will be the epicenter of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Although the plans are still hazy, the project will feature several sustainable factors including a shimmering crystalline skin.

Slika

The translucent skin is meant to represent the “color and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night” and will envelope 40,000 people when the stadium is full. As with the entire plan of the Olympic games in Sochi, sustainability is key, although no details have yet been presented to outline the green features of the new stadium. Much like many of the eco-stadiums in recent years, advanced material technology, lightweight structures, as well as daylighting and natural ventilation will most likely play an important role.

“The main stadium design, in addition to the venue overlay plan we have prepared for the 2014 Games, delivers a wonderful vision for the winter Olympics, and a lasting sustainable legacy for Sochi. Its sweeping form responds to both its coastal location and mountainous backdrop, whilst its crystalline skin engages with its surroundings by day, and provides an iconic representation of the colour and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night. We are proud to be involved on such a level with Olympstroy,” said John Barrow, Populous senior principal. Populous is a fast moving and expanding firm with an impressive resume already in it’s first year of operation. Since December 2008, they have already won the bid to design the 2012 Olympic Stadium for London.

Tokyo’s 2016 Olympic Bid Includes Stunning Solar Powered Stadium
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/01/09

Slika

It must be eco-stadium madness here at Inhabitat, because here’s yet another stadium design, this time as part of Tokyo’s bid proposal for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Tomorrow is the big day for the International Olympic Committee, who will be deciding the host city for the 2016 games. Tokyo is hoping to entice the IOC with their sustainably oriented plan, use of solar power, renovation of existing facilities and compact layout of the Olympic Village. Tokyo is up against some very strong competitors though and will have shine brightly to win the bid over Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.

The main stadium located in the heart of the city near the water and will be completely powered by solar power, just like the solar stadium in Taiwan used in the 2009 World Games. The Tokyo 2016 Bid Team is playing up their environmental efforts showcasing what Tokyo has to offer in terms of sustainability and how the city will ensure that the environment is a top priority.

On top of the solar stadium, Tokyo will work to reuse current facilities and rework them, rather than building brand new facilities which requires the use of virgin resources and more energy during construction. Many of the facilities will include green roofs to help reduce stormwater runoff. And with Tokyo already being a dense and compact city, 97% of the facilities and venues used for the 2016 games will be located with an 8km radius of the Olympic Stadium and Village. This tight and compact plan will help encourage the use of public transportation, reduce driving by car and hopefully ease traffic congestion.

Good luck to the four cities vying for the games. May the most sustainable bid win!

Flood Harvesting Housing Brings Tidal Power to New York City
by Lea Bogdan, 10/07/09

The concept of harvesting energy from river waves to power New York City just got more enticing. Earlier this year we brought you GRO Architects notable concept, which stood out among the entries for Metropolis Magazine’s 2009 Next Generation Design Competition. Brian Novello, one of the partners in the project, also has a beautiful design to expand these modular docking stations in energy-collecting floating houses, and it looks so cool that we had to spread the news.

Slika
Slika

To refresh your memory, GRO Architects‘ floating walkways are designed to extend from piers and use the river current to spin their large turbines. Power would be generated silently while the passersby could also use the spaces within the network of turbines for walkways, public spaces, or even residences as the project’s title suggests.

The first iterations of this design featured a set of open structures with faceted cladding and rib cage-like walkways. In Brian Novello’s version, the walkways are more like enclosed passageways inside of the swirling turbines, and a sleek and technical look has been given to the central connecting modules that act as green spaces for trees. This new look is similar to the pristine, yet engineered style of a brightly colored Dyson vacuum, but it is appropriate since the action of water in a turbine lends itself to these twisting forms.

Brian Novello has posted a fly through video of the project, which gives a nice overview of the spaces. These structures could act as a nice retreat from the city streets, since they seems very inviting in their modernity. In addition to the architectural achievements, the FH2 Flood Harvesting Housing project could have significant value for adding green space and collecting power for the city. We hope that these design updates means that headway is being made toward making a hydropower project a reality in New York City.

ACME United Nations Memorial Space Inspired by Cells
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/13/09

Slika

A recent competition earlier in 2009 held by the city of Chungju in South Korea made a call for a memorial space in the city’s United Nations Peace Park. Coming in at 3rd place was London-based firm ACME with their dramatic hive-like design. Drawing from the very core of what the United Nations is, this building is comprised of individual cells combined together to form a cube structure, mirroring how the UN is made up of individual countries who come together to form one entity. ACME’s proposal also includes an idyllic green roof and plenty of natural daylight.

Slika

The structure is built from hexagonal cells on the exterior as well as throughout the interior. Built as a metaphor for how the UN operates and functions, this memorial space is meant to “represent the nature of the organization, where many different nations come together to create one entity, but without losing their
individual identities.” Inside there are two conference halls, a theater, an exhibition space and an assembly hall for 1,500 people. The cellular design will also serve as a multi-function meeting space and house offices, restaurants, meeting and educational space as well as public viewing platforms.

An open staircase winds up the exterior of the building and leads all the way up to the roof, where a public garden and green roof await. Rooms, meeting space and public areas are all well lit by natural daylight. We’re quite taken with this design proposal and considering it received 3rd place, we’d love to know what the first and second place designs were.

Gigantic Coal Gasometers Transformed into Thriving Communities
by Diane Pham, 10/14/09

Slika

In 1896 the Viennese authorities decided to invest in large-scale gas and electric utilities, so they constructed what became Europe’s largest gas plant. After nearly a century long run the plant was decommissioned, and left behind were four massive gasometers. These incredible structures were cast off, but a recent revitalization project led by Jean Nouvel, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Manfred Wehdorn, and Wilhelm Holzbauer have transformed these four tanks into spectacular and thriving communities.

Slika

The gasometers are four gigantic gas tanks enclosed by a brick façade, each approximately 230 feet tall, 197 feet in diameter, and with a storage capacity of over 3 million cubic feet. Once used for the storage of coal gas, the gasometers were retired in 1984 as the city shifted over to natural gas. By 1981 these structure were classified as heritage buildings due to their unique architecture, and thus escaped demolition. Despite random use since the closing of the plant (see the setting in the James Bond movie The Living Daylights. Also see: rave venue hosting Gazometer-Raves – the term “Gazometer” was coined on its scene) they remained on the whole abandoned empty containers.

Vienna knew the value of these amazing structures couldn’t be left to dematerialize before their eyes so in 1992 the city called for new ideas that would revitalize these monuments. What came were designs by the architects Jean Nouvel, Coop Himmelblau, Manfred Wehdorn and Wilhelm Holzbauer, and between 1999 and 2001 the Gasometers were gutted leaving only the brick exterior and parts of the roof. The structures were then renovated into 615 new apartments, a student dormitory, offices, a day care center, a multiplex, over 70 shops, restaurants, bars and cafes an events hall, and the Vienna National Archive!

Today the gasometers form a unique city center all their own, with a strong sense of community given its abundant housing and diversity of destinations. Numerous theses and dissertations in psychology, urban planning, journalism and architecture have been written about the phenomenon which has arisen from the project.

Médiacité: A New Sustainable Shopping Center For Liège Belgium
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/15/09

Slika

Later this month, Médiacité, a new shopping and entertainment center with some exciting green features will open up in the center of Liège, Belgium. Located nearby the new train station, Gare des Guillemins by Santiago Calatrava, Médiacité will help rehabilitate the central city economically and culturally. With sweeping lines, advanced materials and environmentally aware design and construction, the new shopping center is an exciting new urban infill project and will surely be a big hit.

Slika

Centrally located and easily accessible by foot, bike and over 1,000 buses that go by each day, the shopping center is ideally situated in order to reduce carbon emissions of visiting shoppers. The entire shopping center is covered in ETFE with lots of skylights on the roof to bring in natural light. Air quality will be properly maintained through the use of air treatment stations on the roof, and some of the roof (undisclosed amount) has been planted.

Rainwater will be collected from the roof and stored and waste material will be properly sorted. Energy efficiency was also a top priority, and the project includes many energy efficient strategies like allowing the shops limited access to electricity to reduce their consumption, high-efficiency condensing gas boilers and a semi-reflective transparent roofing material that reduces heat gain.

The interior will host ample retail space, a post office, an ice rink, movie theater, bowling alley, as well as restaurants and office space. Designed by London-based Israeli architect, Ron Arad, with the help of Chapman Taylor and RTKL, the Médiacité has earned environmental accreditation under BREEAM. The opening and inauguration of the new center will happen on Tuesday, October 20th.

Tallest Building in Asia Revealed for Seoul, South Korea
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/21/09

Slika

A new super skyscraper has just been announced for South Korea and will tower over all other buildings in Asia when it is complete in 2014. From a global perspective, Lotte Super Tower 123, designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, falls just short of taking the title, and will be not the tallest but the second tallest skyscraper in the world. The structure will serve as the new corporate headquarters for the Lotte Group, whose subsidairy, Lotte Construction, will build it. Zoning has been approved and excavation is nearly complete. With aims towards LEED silver certification, the tower will have a strong environmental component and will offer Seoulians mixed-use areas such as shops, apartments, offices and a hotel.

Slika

To be built in the southern Jamsil section of the city near the Han River, the Super Lotte Tower will sit next to a key transportation hub, efficiently bringing in commuters as well as tourists eager to see the new attraction. Mixed-use development was a key element in the design, and the vertical city will include public transport connectors, retail and residential space, offices, a hotel, an observation deck, and other public areas. Exact details on the sustainable design elements of the structure have not been released, but the firm is aiming for LEED certification, which will hopefully by that time include building performance monitoring to ensure energy savings.

Kohn Pederson Fox, who is also responsible for the new eco-district Songdo IBD, is well known for designing super structures – especially in Asia. US architecture firms like KPF have been looking abroad for design work and have managed to stay afloat with contracts developing regions in Asia as well as the Middle East.

The New Bouwkunde Architecture Proposal Swoops Like a Skateboard Ramp
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/20/09

Slika

Back in 2008, a devastating fire tore through the Bouwkunde building where the Faculty of Architecture at the Delft University of Technology resided, resulting in a loss of more than just a structure, but also a home base for many students and faculty. To put the tragedy in the past, the university set out to start anew with a design competition to rebuild the Bouwkunde that would focus on community, sustainability, and adaptability. One of the designs is from Adam Wojtalik for his masters project, and resembles the biggest skateboard ramp you’ve ever seen. His clever solar panel-clad design for The New Bouwkunde features well thought out work areas for both students and faculty and lots of public space for relaxing and meeting.

Slika

The New Bouwkunde is made up of an eleven story tower connected by a curved glass roof to a five story tower. The two-tower building works to separate student area from the faculty zone, while still housing them in the same complex. Below the towers is a covered green lawn adjacent to a pavilion with a canteen, coffee bar, lounge, book store, exhibition space, all connected to an auditorium.

Half of the curved glass roof would be covered in photovoltaic panels, resulting in 1500 m2 of photovoltaic cells, which produce 4,000 kWh per day of renewable energy. The two tower system allows for a double façade circulation system, increasing the efficiency of natural ventilation. While Wojtalik’s proposal was not a winning design, we like how his concept contains two separate zones for students and faculty, and brings them together on the lower floors. The Winners for the Building for Bouwkunde competition are certainly impressive as well and also worth a look.

Rathaus Terraces: Mixed-Use Development for Medieval German City
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/20/09

Slika

Weilburg, a medieval city not too far from Frankfurt, has announced plans to demolish a parking structure on the edge of its dense core and replace it with a mixed-use development with retail, residential and park space. Recently they revealed this beautiful proposal from ACME, which won the all-important public vote and second place from the professional jury. Inspired by the nearby Baroque terraced-landscape design of the Weilburg Castle Gardens, the Rathaus Terraces will feature green roofs, as well as natural ventilation and daylighting.

Slika

Located outside of the city center on a hillside above a ravine, the Rathaus Terraces form a sloping and terraced vegetated landscape meant to integrate with the surrounding hills. The 19,200 square meter project will contain large format retail oriented towards the city center to attract passerbys. Residences, and apartments will be dispersed throughout the development and additional parking spaces will be created. New pedestrian paths will criss-cross around the development and connect to the city center and public parks with views towards the city and surrounding landscape will serve as an important amenity to residents and visitors.

The architecture of the development is characterized by horizontal layers that morph and change into new forms, much like the natural topography. These “fins” of natural stone allow daylight to filter in, act as shade and rain screens, and encourage natural ventilation. All the new structures are topped with green roof public parks, which aid in the protection and insulation of the structures and simultaneously help with water infiltration.

The Rathaus Terraces look like an exciting new development and a welcome replacement for the former parking garage. Not only will the development provide more residential and open space so close to the dense urban medieval city, but will also have amazing views.

Rio’s Paineiras Hotel to Receive Eco Renovation
by Bridgette Meinhold, 10/19/09

Slika

With the World Cup scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2014 and the Summer Olympic games following in 2016, officials in Rio thought it was high time to revitalize the abandoned Paineiras hotel and turn it into a model for sustainable tourism. Their recently unveiled plan is a stunning green-roofed eco-hotel that makes the surrounding environment its highest priority.

Slika
Slika

The original Hotel Paineiras was built in 1884 by the Pedro II, Emperor of Portugal as a luxurious rest stop for wealthy travelers on their way to the Corcovado statue, the symbol of Rio de Janeiro. At Paineiras, visitors to Corcovado would board a train to continue the rest of the way up to the famous monument. Over time the hotel has since fallen into disrepair and for the last 30 or so years, has been left abandoned.

This renewed design for the Hotel Paineiras Complex received an honorable mention in a national contest. The complex sits in the middle of the Tijuca National Park, approximately 1 km from the famous monument of Christ The Redeemer. The old hotel, which is unfortunately in a state of total disrepair, must be torn down in order to renovate the site. In its stead, a new complex will be built, consisting of tourism center for the memorial and national park and an eco hotel and convention center. The tourism center will include indoor public place, exhibition halls, lockers, shops, a café, changing rooms for hikers, outdoor space, and a train station which will take visitors to the monument.

The eco-hotel and surrounding complex will be built with the greatest care for the surrounding environment. Nestled into the natural topography of the area, the hotel will be surrounded by a green buffer zone will that provides a transition zone into the forest. The structure will be built from steel and “non-aggressive methods,” with a focus on streamlining and reducing construction waste. On the western facade a large wall will be built to protect the hotel from solar heat gain.

The architects took three main points into consideration with this project. First, the hotel and visitor center must keep environmental impact to a minimum. Second, the hotel must impart some of the historical character of the original hotel, which is held in the collective memory of the citizens of Rio. Finally, the new infrastructure must be able to handle the influx of visitors from the upcoming events in Brazil, by minimizing traffic jams, providing parking, serving as a transfer station, and providing enough space and amenities for visitors. We expect to see many excellent projects like this being developed for Rio in the coming years.

Siromašni seljaci preobraženi u bogate kapitaliste u toku samo jedne generacije
Dobro došli u najbogatije selo u Kini!

Huaksi simbolizuje 60 godina komunističke vladavine u Kini.

Svi žitelji imaju besplatno lečenje, obrazovanje i penzije.

The world is not based on reality but on the perception of reality. The problem is that for most, illusion is the reality...
