Obrenovac bridge set for opening

30 Nov 2011

The bridge on the Sava River near Obrenovac will officially be open for traffic tomorrow. Today, they were carrying out finishing works, so tomorrow everything would be ready for the release of the bridge for traffic.

The finishing works on the bridge were completed in the most part, at least to the extent necessary to move motor vehicles. Work began in February and during that time the bridge was partialy modified and strengthened for its new function. Although the bridge is designed for carrying heating pipelines, a new project adjusted the bridge for motor traffic, while maintaining previous purpose to carry utility infrastructure.

The redesign involved the installation of 176 plate slabs to carry traffic and construction of access roads and connections with the rest of the road network. The steel structure of the bridge was further strengthened, and the pillars with additional capacity increased with concrete piles. In addition steel girders were added, which will carry pedestrian paths and hopefully one day the main heating pipeline. In this way, with small modifications bridge near Obrenovac got another function, providing a direct link between Belgrade’s boroughs Obrenovac and Surcin.

Although the bridge will be open tomorrow for traffic, works on this project have not yet been completed. There’s still work on the bridge, as well as access roads which must be connected to the bypass highway as part of the so-called. "Srem gazelle" expressway. Also, there is still to finish approaches for pedestrians on both sides of the bridge.

The steel structure of the bridge over the river is 440 meters long with another 180 meters of reinforced concrete structures on Surcin side, which makes the entire structure 620 meters long. Width of the bridge is 14.5 meters with two lanes in each direction. The construction of the bridge was contracted to "Mostogradnja", while the reinforced concrete bridge segments as access ramps were built by "Inter-cop". The value of works is estimated at 1.5 billion RSD.
