» Introduction
The floods that took place in Belgrade last year, actualized the issue of the flood barrier construction as well as reparation of the existing ones. In Belgrade there is few locations, mostly in Zemun, which are a weak link in flood protection system. In that light, the representatives of ‘Srbija vode’ company presented the project of the construction of new barrier on Zemun quay in City Council building. The officials of this company, pointed out that projects and solutions for Belgrade’s protection system have been finished long time ago, but unfortunately nothing has been built for 30 years to tackle this problem. The largest problem, in their opinion, is land ownership and authority.
The flood barriers stretching along New Belgrade-Zemun banks are 15 kilometers long and are a part of one integral system. The new levee will be 350 meters long and its construction is financed by Ministry for agriculture, forestry and water management with 90 million dinars. The installment of new quay and following infrastructure will be financed by Land Development Agency with 35 million dinars. The new embankment will be upstream from the restaurant “Saran” and will have a new traffic route, bicycle paths, wide promenade for pedestrians and even a boat dock.
The construction company is “Ratko Mitrovic” and works on it will start in May 2008, to be finished 6 months later.
